TRADITIONAL BRACES

Traditional Braces

Thanks to today’s technology, patients now have more options when it comes to wearing braces.  While regular metal (stainless steel) brackets are widely used, ceramic (translucent) braces are becoming increasingly popular.

Traditional braces are more effective at treating extreme overcrowding than other options like aligners (Invisalign) and are less expensive.  They give your orthodontist the control he needs to move your teeth in small increments at a time.  While less noticeable orthodontics like Invisalign may seem like a better choice for those who are conscious of their appearance, today’s braces are more visually appealing than in past years, with a range of colour options for both the brackets and elastics.  Wearing these types of braces also means that you don’t have to worry about ever misplacing your aligners and for teenagers this is the great benefit of braces.

Retainers

Teeth retainers are appliances which maintain and hold the alignment of your teeth after the completion of active orthodontic treatment (braces).  Retainers are usually passive and are not designed to move teeth.  Even after orthodontic treatment, teeth can lose their alignment over time.  Retainers are designed to prevent such unwanted changes.

There are three basic types of retainers;

  • Clear retainers – made from clear plastic.
  • Fixed retainers – are thin wires adhered to the back of your front teeth ( top and bottom).
  • Hawley retainers – made of acrylic and wire, and are often referred to as ‘plates’.
