Orthodontic treatment falls under the category of preventative dentistry – the aim of treatment is to correct teeth and in some cases jaw position to allow normal functional bite relationships. The positioning of teeth in stable gum and bone support to co-ordinate with jaw movement is paramount. Orthodontic treatment involves an understanding of tooth position in supporting bone in conjunction with jaw movement and the interaction of muscle and soft tissue.
Timing is important taking into account what is in the best interests of the patient long-term. Early Orthodontic treatment is indicated in some situations but not all.
